High point of the finals: Grady Champion, no doubt about it. He was last act of the night and had the whole Orpheum crowd up and dancing-even me. Before the winner was announced I told him "I don't know if you're the winner but for damn sure you're the star."

Other moments-Sonny Moorman is one heck of a lap steel player.

There's a really good band from India called "Soulmate." Kind of a Stax feel.

It's such a big event you need a guide. Sadly Dennis was not there. Such a fractured blues world nowdays as many kinds as you can take or not. Solo duo seemed to be over run with modern transducer pluckers not a tone I seek. I enjoyed the few CBG players i could find and That young Band Eden Lost or something like that. Guy and Scrappy put on a great show. I wanted to see the results but the acts at the Daisy were my least favorite of the modern blues so i had to leave or stick a knife in my head. I'm really lucky to be a part of this blues world so I enjoy my corner down in Clarksdale or Up At Deep Blues and Sturgeon Bay. The CBG fest was my pollywick and i enjoyed ever second of it. Tried to play on the street and my banned status was still in force. Thank goodness it's nasty and damp. Doug Beckman Opened up and did a wonderful show. Jon Short played next and wowed me with the one man band sound I seek and Dan Traener followed with his band. He has a real cool african mask guit and ended his set with a tribute to Othar and Fred tribute. what's not to love. I ended and scared the heck out a few and won over some. I played dead mans slide in dennis' memory and had a fun set. A great event for memphis and my little empire saved the farm. Thanks IBC. Jon Short is my Champ . I think his tone whoops that Taylor strumers tinny sound. If Fred was alive I think he would agree.

I was only able to see performers at one venue (as a judge), but we had some noteworthy performers-including Harrison Kennedy and Volker Strifler (I guess the other judges saw it differently). It was the best solo/duo venue I've judged in 6 years.

Volker's from out around Sonoma Valley I think ain't he? Rolfy did a number of reviews for that band. He always raved about em. Do a search on this site fer Volker Strifler and see what comes up.

I have one of his CDs. I played it back to back three times the first day I had it, then a couple of times a day for a month. I saw him with a full band at IBC last year and was just amazed at how good he was. Volker is certainly someone we should all make an effort to see.

It's exactly as they say, "opinions are like assholes, everybody has one"

My fav. was one who didn't make the finals, to which I have an opinion as to why not. :)
The Twisters. The bass player who was very good and a great entertainer...when he played instead of talked.(which he did Fri. night and IMHO is where he/they blew it)

Grady was nothing more than a Bobby Rush without the fat chicks. However I can see why he won. High energy and entertaining, I have no problem that he won, just not overly original.

My cup of tea is more along the lines of Jackie Scott & the Housewreckers, Karen Lovely(won 2nd,)Twisters, ect.

I enjoyed the band finals. The solo/duo was another story. That was nothing short of horrendous. OK, there were a couple that were pretty good. But what was the name of the clown who stopped during his show and says "Where's the time keeper?" "How much time do I have?" I about passed out. How he got in the finals and not Harrison Kennedy is a mystery to me and everyone I talked to.
To top it off, unlike the Twisters bass player who was excellent but blew it, the clown was boring me from the start. The winner, Matt Anderson was good and very entertaining, I see why he won. Personally I liked others better, overall.

As for the India band. Wed. night I thought they were...good. Saw them on Thur. or Fri. and after 5 mins. I said "This is really bad, I gotta get out of here".
Other fan favorites were The Latvian Blues Band, Levee Town, Bo Weavil, Grana Louise & Troublemaker, Ryan Heart & the Blue Hearts.

Albert King Award. I told Matt Kelly on Fri. night. "IF you guys get in the finals, you'll win the AKW". Yes, I know him but based that statement on what I had heard to that point.
The judges had the same opinion. Some friends said they didn't think he was all that.
It's all opinion, nobody's right, nobody's wrong.

Did Gus and Scrappy not make the finals ? They were smoking ! Jon Short was out of site as well. No counting for taste.

There was some amazing stuff to be seen/heard (I loved seeing Jon Short at your CBG, John - that's singing my song, right there. He also made an appearance at the RumBoogie jam Sat. night)

I will confess that I didn't last more than 3 sets of solo/duo at the finals and was back out on Beale (didn't catch any bands there). There was some good stuff going on outside (including Scrappy at the Blues Hall).

My main goal was to meet friends (old and new) and hear some good music; I accomplished that.

I'm as deeply involved with IBC as anyone and I make no attempt to figure out the solo/duo. I gave up the year Ben Prestage came in second. One of the questions I ask is "could this guy make money on the street or in a club?"

Solo/duo I liked Alphonso Sanders and Bill Perry. Bill played a mix of hill country and old Delta grooves with Alphonso singing or adding horn lines as needed. Good stuff. I enjoyed the set by the guy that won, but not sure I'd pay to see him a second time.

I'm with Bluz re: the guy who asked "where's the timekeeper?" I have no clue how he got to the finals. He had the stage presence of a sack of molded flour.

I saw Dan Treanor at Ground Zero. He did a heck of a set both nights. Nice guy as well.

I saw the Twisters both nights in the semis. They were in the same venue as Dan Treanor, Sonny Moorman, crowd favorites Soulmate, Mike Crandall, and Grana Louise. I liked what the Twisters did a lot but can't disagree with the judges' choice of Sonny Moorman. I would have understood if Twisters, Sonny, Mike, Soulmate or Dan had gone to the finals.

Grana Louise blew it with an extremely short set Thursday and a note-for-note cover of "I Can't Stand the Rain" on Friday.

The others? If they did anything wrong I missed it. I would happily pay a cover to see any of them again.

BTW, Matt Kelly was representin' the D.C. Blues Society, wasn't he???

I been tryin' to tell ya'll that there some mighty fine blues folks 'round these parts as well...

N.J. Warren, who died 4 months ago, was fine, fine, fine... I put a thread up here an' he got a ho-hum other than Waymon who also knew and had heard him...

Glad that folks like Matt are makin' some noise for the area...

BTW, Part B... I never heard of Grady Champion... Is that the guys name or his bands name or both???

I had a great time running into people on Beale, and all the music was well rehearsed and played, but I must have missed the Hill Country, or someone has missed the boat.

Speaking of missing the boat, has anyone seen the current Blues Revue's list of top 25 blues albums of the last decade?

I appreciate the magazine, and they have been kind to me, but I am shocked at some of the oversights.

Haven't been able to attend the past two years, but, I have a friend who collects things I bring back from wherever I go (or whatever I can find) and he scrapbooks them. I got to know Scott through my late wife. He was thrilled I played guitar and banjo and that we had the same name.
This guy is in a home for special needs guys. Down's Syndrome.

That's a cool thing to do. We play for a bunch of DS and other developmentally disabled folks once or twice every year. It's a big party, two or three folks, but man do they know how to have fun. Plus we get deluxe air guitarists 'sitting in'--wouldn't miss it for anything.

Once back in the late '80's I had a country/punk band called The Mannequins". We had a helluva time trying to find (yet afford) a prectice space. The drummer worked for the State Mental Hospital, so....we definatly haed a "captive" audience.
Anyway, I hope someone here come through with any peice of paper from the contest.
I'd do it for you.
