 First Concert

About 8 months ago, I formed an acoustic ensemble at my church. Wanted a place to play, and the thing just kinda grew. Last night we performed our first (albeit small) concert for about 75 people. The Joyful Noise Acoustic Ensemble plays old timey music, and every now and then I get to slide a little blues in there. I sang People Get Ready last night, and it went really well. Boy, that was fun.
By the way, The Noise has 6 guitars, a banjo/mandolin player, a uke/dulcimer player, a bass, a djembe player (who also plays his grandmother's washboard), and 4 singers who harmonize beautifully.
Not only is there safety in numbers, but there's something fun about that much sheer sound!

very nice, sounds like a hoot. Joyful Noise Acoustic Ensemble= J'NAE that's a neat acronym.

maybe next time I'm cruising through wherever it is you are I can listen (or sit in?)I used to know where you are but can't recollect. Chlt?

All tweediots are welcome. I'm in Fort Mill, SC, just south of Charlotte. If you're up this way, let me know, and you can meet up on Sunday morning.

We actually practice in a fairly small room, which makes for a lot of sound in such tight quarters. Hence the name... we are surrounded by classrooms, all of whose teachers asked the same question the first few weeks... Do you have to make so much noise?
LOL

Am alway open to suggestions for Sacred Blues type music. If you know any good songs, please feel free to suggest.

"Let's Have Church" was the last Stamps Quartet album before JD Sumner died. There were several good ones on that one. They did a nice shuffle version version of "Steal Away and Pray" that might work out for you.

Had a new guitarist at practice today. One of our members invited a friend of his to bring his daughter to our group. The dad doesn't play, but he hung out and sang, and I handed him a shaker, and he kept a little percussion thing happening. But that doesn't matter. His daughter was playing a small Takamine, has been playing for the last two years, and although never before having played with a group, she hung in there and played beautifully.
It was a little humbling. She's 8 years old.
Since my uke/dulcimer player is around 80, I think we may have to lay claim to the "8 to 80" age range. What are we, Monopoly? :-)

Fun? Fun? Why would cramming a bunch of crazy musicians and singers into a small room filled with old timey music and laughter be considered... fun?

Come on down, ya old hippy. You'll have a blast. Stop in next time you're in Charlotte.

Well, the bad news is that the JNAE doesn't meet in that small room any more. The good news is the reason why. We moved into a larger room, and I'm having trouble making it fit again. Try 16 instruments, 8 singers, and over 90 songs. I'm in the process of setting up mics with a PA just so the singers can be heard over the noise! I'm even having to build a few risers so we can stack one end of the room. And amazingly I seem to continue to be the Conductor on this train wreck, despite the fact that most of the guitarists are much more skilled than I am.
Anybody coming through Charlotte, stop in and jam. We'll make room.
:)

It keeps growing, and it's fairly eclectic in genres. This is from a spreadsheet I did 6 months ago. We've added maybe 20 songs since. Anyone is free to bring in something they like, and if you bring it, you can sing it. A good bunch of folks.

Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace/Chains are gone
As the Deer Panteth
Away in a Manger
Awesome God
Be Thou My Vision
Beautiful River (Shall we gather at the river?)
By the Mark
Calling All Angels
Come, Now is the Time to Worship
Do you know my Jesus?
Down to the River to Pray
Every Move I make
Farther Along
Glory Glory
Good Friday Blues
Great is the Lord
Guide My Feet
Hard Times (Stephen Foster)
He Took Your Place
Here I am to Worship
I Saw the Light
If We Are the Body
I'll Fly Away
In Christ Alone
In the Highways
Jesus Christ is Risen Today
Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee
Just a Closer Walk with Thee
Keep on the Sunny Side of Life
Kum Ba Yah (Whoa!)
Laid My Burden Down
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Life's Railway to Heaven
Long Black Train
Lord I Lift Your Name On High
Love Lifted Me
Morning has Broken
Old Rugged Cross
Orphan Girl
People Get Ready
Put a Little Love in Your Heart
Seek Ye First
Shepherd of Love
Shine, Jesus, Shine
Shout to the Lord
Silent Night
Oh, Sinner Man
Supper Time
Tears in Heaven/ Lord's Prayer
Tramp in the Street
Unclouded Day
Will the Circle Be Unbroken
Will you come and follow Me?
Wings of a Dove
You are my All in All
