 Willie Earl King RIP
Author: WP MISSISSIPPI (---.wpms.net)

The hardest announcement I have ever made on the Tweed board....Willie King passed this morning. We have lost a great soul...I will have more details later........

Willie King was born in Prairie Point, MS, in 1943. After his father left the home, Willie and his siblings were raised by his grandparents, who were local sharecroppers. Music was important to the King family - Willie's grandfather was a gospel singer, and his absent father was an amateur blues musician. Young Willie made a diddley bo by nailing a baling wire to a tree in the yard. By age 9, he had a one-string guitar that he could bring indoors to play at night.

In 1967, Willie King moved to Chicago in an attempt to make more money than he could down South. After a year spent on the West and South Sides, he returned to Old Memphis, Alabama, just across the border from the Mississippi Prairie. A salesman - of shoes, cologne, and other frivolities - Willie traveled the rural roads hawking goods and talking politics. Choosing not to work under the "old system" of unequal treatment, King joined the civil rights movement near the end of the decade.

In 1987, a chance meeting at a festival in Eutaw, Alabama, blew Rooster Blues founder Jim O'Neal away: According to O'Neal, King's "juke-joint musical style and political lyrics knocked me down." The two kept in touch for the next 13 years, during which O'Neal relocated his label, and King concentrated on his own community, forging relationships with local youth through a blues education program, through his organization The Rural Members Association.

The Rural Members Association has sponsored classes in music, woodworking, food preservation, and other African-American traditions, and has provided transportation, legal assistance, and other services for the needy over the past two decades. In recent years he's been sponsoring a festival on the creek, which is known as The Freedom Creek Festival. Willie explains, "We was targetin' at tryin' to get all walks of life, different people to come down and kinda be with us in reality down there, you know. Let's get back to reality, in the woods . . . mix and mingle . . . get to know each other. Get up to have a workin' relationship, try to bring peace . . ."

King's follow up, Living In a New World, is nothing short of spectacular. Produced by Jim O'Neal and recorded at Easley Studio in Memphis, the album reminds the listener of Curtis Mayfield while allowing RL Burnside fans to rejoice as well.

In addition to the two CD's on the Rooster Blues label, Willie has also two independently recorded CDs - Walkin' the Walk, Talkin' the Talk which was recorded with local Alabama bluesman "Birmingham" George Conner, and the widely acclaimed I Am The Blues. His latest release was recorded live at Bettie's Place, a deep South rural juke joint. Entitled Jukin' At Bettie's, this CD is now available online at Willie King's CD Store, and can be downloaded from iTunes and other digital distributors.

Thanks for posting that Mizmo.

Although He was to the side in the dark that video really shines a light on who Willie was and what He was about.

When Morris called on Willie , Willie gave it to Caleb.

Willie gave so much to so many.

He was and always will be a great blessing and influence in Caleb's and my life.

I was in shock yesterday ,
it's really hit home here today

God Bless You Willie ,

Legendary local bluesman Willie King dies at 66

March 9, 2009

Kristin Mamrack

Willie King felt the love in Columbus.

To an adoring crowd in the Omnova Theater of the Rosenzweig Arts Center Saturday night, the acclaimed bluesman sang of Friendly City “angels,” who overwhelmed him with “love,” imparted words of wisdom from his grandfather and spoke of hard times and great joys, all with a smile on his face and a dance in his step.

Sunday he was gone.

On his 66th birthday, King, whose love of community rivaled his love of music, died of a massive heart attack around 2 p.m. at Noxubee General Hospital.

“Every day, he walked, talked and preached about the blues,” said one of his daughters, Esther Eaton of West Greene, Ala. “He was the blues. He looked to the music as a source of strength that helped him through difficult times.”

“Willie will be remembered as an international blues artist, as well as by the love, compassion and generosity he extended to all,” Big Joe Shelton, a local blues musician, who often played with King, said this morning. “He made me strive to be a better man.”

“He was a giant of a man,” said Beverly Norris of Columbus. “Anything he got, he always seemed to be giving out to other folks.”

“Ever since he first heard a blues musician play at his grandmother’s juke joint over 60 years ago, Willie King has been consumed by the blues,” said Rick Asherson, assistant director of the Alabama Blues Project. “His life story is about great music, but equally it is about care, interest and concern for the community he grew up in — King’s own definition of the blues life.”

Born in 1943 in Prairie Point, King’s music career began, with a six-string “diddly-bo,” on a plantation.

Well-known to Golden Triangle blues fans, King focused on “passing on” his talent and knowledge to the next generation.

“He was just one of the greatest human beings you’d ever want to meet,” said Caleb Childs, a young blues prodigy who worked closely with and was mentored by King.

“It was just a complete shock,” added Childs, 20, of Louisville, who performed with King Saturday. “He seemed so fine the night before. I really didn’t want to believe it. He’s really taught me a lot about life, with his messages of people coming together and loving one another. Saturday night, he said something I really remember: He said he didn’t fight for civil rights anymore; he fought for human rights.”

On Jan. 8, King performed in Columbus, but fell ill and, with urging from the audience, was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle.

His concert Saturday night was a tribute to the many friends in attendance during the January concert, who cared for him and took him to the hospital.

Elated and energetic, Saturday he debuted a new song dedicated to the experience.

“He told us if he hadn’t been in Columbus, Miss., that night, he would have gone on to meet his Lord right then,” recalled Norris, who helped coordinate the recent concert. “He said if he’d been at home, he never would have gotten up and gone to the doctor. He was grateful for all the people around him who cared so much about him.”

Having released six recordings and played numerous festivals, King also was known to blues aficionados nationally and internationally.

“The loss of this blues man will be felt by fans and musicians all over the world, who have been touched by his unique juke joint blues and uplifting message of peace, love and social justice,” said Asherson.

An unassuming bluesman, who lived simply in his rural community, King played blues festivals in Europe, appeared in Martin Scorsese’s documentary, “Feel Like Going Home” and was the subject of a documentary, “Down Home,” by Dutch filmmakers Saskia Rietmeijer and Bart Drolenga of Visible World Films.

In 2005, King was inducted into the Howlin’ Wolf Hall of Fame.

He was recognized by Living Blues magazine in 2000, 2001 and 2003 and was nominated for the traditional blues male artist of the year in the 2006 Blues Music Awards.

King also was a repeated nominee for the W.C. Handy Awards.

Scores of local and out-of-town fans yearly traveled to Old Memphis, Ala., where King lived, for his annual Freedom Creek Festival, which benefited The Rural Members Association — King’s organization sponsoring classes in music, woodworking, food preservation and other African-American traditions.

The Rural Members Association also provided transportation, legal assistance and other services for the needy for the past two decades.

This year’s Freedom Creek Festival was scheduled for May 29 and 30.

Handled by Lavender Funeral Home in Aliceville, Ala., arrangements for King were incomplete this morning.

Dispatch Lifestyles Editor Jan Swoope contributed to this story.

From Willie-King.com:

Bill Wax of Bluesville on XM Satellite Radio writes on Monday, March 9th: "Willie was fine musician but more importantly he was a great person who used his talents and music to make life better for others. This afternoon beginning at 3:30 pm I will do a tribute to Willie and his music for about an hour on B.B. King’s Bluesville.

I was just flashing back on this show in Tuscaloosa last fall. Being that is was an artshow/fundraiser, Willie had a bunch of high-rolling society folks in his tent during the last set, but he had them out and carrying on like it was midnight at the Moon Winx.

Has anyone talked to Willie James?

Morris and I have had him on our minds so much since this happened. If you do have contact with him, Morris said to tell him, "Willie, it's just us now - and Caleb."

WP, Morris said it's going to be alright. Gotta keep going. Gotta keep building.

We are planning to go to Aliceville on Sunday. We have talked to the Perry's (Homemade Jamz) and think that they will also be in attendance.

I'm planning on going to Aliceville as well. I was able to feature Willie on last night's broadcast, and recorded an entire hour of his material for my Saturday evening show.

I'm glad to see (but am not surprised) by the support shown in the community for Willie's family of survivors.

I wrote this email on Tuesday, when I asked for a login so I could post it here:

I only met Mr. King once; I played bass with him during his last show on Saturday night. I attended his January 8, 2009 show (when he got sick), and of course I noticed he didn't have a bass player. When I head about his makeup concert, I called and left a message, offering to bring my bass if he needed a bass player. Just one week ago today (last Tuesday, March 3) I got a voicemail back from him (which I still have), which said "we would appreciate it if you'd bring your bass out Saturday evening", that he looked forward to seeing me, and "may God continue on blessin' ya". I called him back to confirm that I'd be there, and told him it would be an honor to play with him, and he said "It will be an honor to play with you!" He was very warm and generous, and it put me at ease.

I had seen him 4 or 5 times over the past 4 years (when we moved to Mississippi), and I had 3 of his CDs. I spent all last week listening to them, trying to really absorb the feeling of his music so my bass parts would come out right. During the gig, he seemed to me to be very strong and happy...he seemed to have a great time (as did the band and the audience).

After the gig, I hung out for awhile and talked to him. He told me about how he met Howlin' Wolf in the late 60's in Chicago, how once he figured out the club where Howlin' Wolf played he would go there every week to hear him. He also told me about coming back to Alabama and Mississippi. He was just very warm and friendly. He seemed tired but relaxed and happy, although he was also concerned about his cousin who was sick.

He also did me the huge favor of complimenting my playing; he said he would call me again with a "working gig". I was elated! I went home very excited about getting to play with him again.

The next day I head the news about 6 pm from a phone call. I was shocked and amazed and sad. How could this talented, nice, warm musician and "real" person, with whom I had just had such a great musical experience, not even 24 hours before, be gone that quick?

From all the other postings here, I can see just how lucky I am to have gotten to meet him and to have played a gig with him. I'll certainly never forget last Saturday night!

Just got home from Willie's memorial service at Aliceville City Hall. There were hundreds of people in attendance including quite a few musicians. All three Willie's from the band were accounted for, and Willie James delivered an impassioned pledge to keep Freedom Creek going and Willie King's dream alive and well. I spoke to him briefly after the service and he was all ahead full, ready to continue.

A number of speeches and rememberances were uttered (some in violation of the 3-minute limit imposed by the hostess-in-charge), and several vocal solos took place, along with a nice harmonica tribute.

I had the pleasure of seeing many friends from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa as well as the rural areas, and seeing fellow Tweeducators Morris and Mizmo, and WP who was kind enough to walk up and introduce himself. I hope Richard will post here in better detail as he was more connected to the family. If rumors are correct, some kind of party is taking place at Betty's right now--wish I could have stayed for it.

All in all, a fine send-off for a much loved neighbor it was.

I wish I could have been at Willie King's memorial service...I certainly thought about it many times today as the day progressed. I am on a business trip this weekend that was planned months ago, in Lafayette Louisiana, so I worked all day.

I was planning to attend Freedom Creek this year; I do hope it happens...I would love to meet more musicians, and help memorialize Mr. King. My sister-in-law went two years ago and loved it, but last year I was on another business trip during Freedom Creek weekend. This year I will won't be traveling, so I hope it happens!

Hard to take this as I cannot imagine Willie not being with us anymore. Yes his legacy and music will live on but it's hard to swallow after seeing him put to rest. Thanks for all of your support and was good to see everyone yesterday. I hope the family will do right by Willie and honor what he would have wanted...to have his name and efforts remembered and to have his guitar and amp place were it belongs, here with the Wolf!
I'm still choked up and am sitting on the patio listnin to Terrorized. The voice, the sound of a true spirit. There will never be another Willie King. God I loved that man! Amen.

Welcome to Wolf Country!

I share the same feelings as you WP. I also had hoped that the guitar and amp might be placed in the Howlin' Wolf Museaum, so that I, as well as all his fans, could visit and view it from time to time. The only thing better would be if there was a Willie King Museaum. Maybe at some point it could be considered to make the Howlin Wolf museaum the Howlin Wolf - Willie King Museaum. We all loved Willie so much and I know that he loved the Howlin Wolf. He told me so numerous times. I hope to see you soon Richard.
