The Dean...

Joe Dean

Joe Dean,vcl,p-1908,St. Louis,MO
+ June 24,1981,St. Louis,MO

Joe Dean's nickname,Joe Dean from Bowling Green, was given to him by J. Mayo of Vocalion Records.
But Dean was born and raised in St. Louis, not Bowling Green.
Dean cut only one record,at a 1930 Chicago session: "I'm So Glad I'm Twenty-One Years Old Today" and "Mexico Bound Blues".
Joe sang and played piano around St. Louis for some 25 years, occasionally traveling to Memphis,Arkansas,Kansas,Colorado and Illinois.
In the early '70s,retiring from his job at a local steel mill,he became a minister...

Oop-De-Oop...

L to R: Howlin' Wolf / Jody Williams / Earl Phillips / Hubert Sumlin

Earl Phillips,vcl,d-1920,Harlem,NY
+ November 20,1990,Chicago,IL

Earl was born in New York, and later moved to Nashville, where he took up the drums in high school.
At the age of 20 he traveled to Chicago, and on his first night he landed a job in the house band at
Joe Hughes' "female impersonators" club.
For the next several years he played Jazz,Swing and Blues with local musicians, such as J.T. Brown,
Little Walter,Muddy Waters and Jody Williams.
When Howlin' Wolf brought his band up from the South minus drummer Willie Steel,Phillips secured
the job on drums.
In 1954 "No Place To Go" became the first of Phillips 38 Chess-issued Wolf recordings.
Earl's strong propulsive style also can be heard on such classics as "Smokestack Lightning",
"Moanin' For My Baby","How Long","Sittin' On Top Of The World" and "Evil".
Phillips was often nicknamed "Oop-De-Oop" after a 1955 Vee Jay recording he'd cut.
Earl went to the recording studios regularly during the '50s and early '60s.
He is often referred to as the house drummer at Vee Jay.
He appeared on more than 60 Reed-sides for Vee Jay,and recorded with Snooky Pryor,Eddie Taylor,
John Lee Hooker and Billy Boy Arnold.
Earl Phillips dropped out of the music-scene in the mid-'60s,because of a continuing leg problem.
In his retirement he played drums for the Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Later he was a deacon in the New Life Baptist Church.
Earl was one of the "Big Five" postwar Blues drummers, wich helped give birth to the modern Blues beat...

Thanks Marc, we don't tell you that enough. The shot of Albert King shows him playing a righty guitar lefty. But it is still strung righty. My neighbor plays that way and I was thinking about the subtle difference in the chords cause he strums top to bottom sounding the high strings first. Any thoughts?

peace
